Life On Ice: 25 Years of Arctic Exploration
This memoir by renowned Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre is a great adventure read and a firsthand chronicle of life and climate change in the Arctic region. Dupre has spent most of his adult life either traveling in the Arctic or planning his next trip there. Life on Ice, featuring a 32-page full-color photo insert, includes Dupre’s most significant achievements – the world’s first circumnavigation of Greenland and a summer North Pole expedition that reached 68 million people worldwide.
During his Arctic travels, Dupre has participated in scientific research and cultural exchanges for organizations such as National Geographic Society, Greenpeace, the Explorers Club, the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and the U.S. Department of Atmospheric Sciences. His findings have been called “the Holy Grail of global warming data.” Dupre is a recipient of the 2004 Rolex Laureate Award.
Amazon.com readers say:
Lonnie Dupre joins a select group of explorers who have traveled extensively in the Arctic under the most extreme conditions, and survived to tell their stories. In this book he takes you with him, kayaking in high seas, camping in wind chills of -100º F, and dragged behind a team of dogs charging toward a crevasse. Add to that a few encounters with hungry polar bears and arctic wolves.
Life on Ice is high adventure told in fascinating detail, sprinkled with do-or-die feats of endurance and narrow escapes…but the book is also about relationships: with the family left behind, with the human and animal companions who traveled with him on his journeys, and the Inuit people who welcomed him and shared their knowledge and culture. Finally, it’s about our changing relationship with nature. These deeply lived and felt pages challenge us to think about our future as stewards of the one place that shelters and sustains us. This book deserves a wide audience. (T. Fiero)
